First Impressions

The Evidson Audiowear R5 earphone package is very standard but one thing does stand out and that is the built-in remote. That is VERY useful in increasing/ decreasing the volume, pausing/skipping a song or for answering calls without having to touch your phone. This works will all Android phones I used it with and it claims to work with even Windows Mobile and iOS phones.

To have something like that in such an inexpensive earphone is VERY impressive.

Comfort and fit were all good and the earphones are light enough to not be fatiguing in your ears.

Sound Quality

I’ll be very honest. I had written off the Evidson Audiowear R5 earphones even before hearing them. They cost a measly Rs 700 (~ $10) and most of the earphones at this price range have very uninspiring sound quality. Most of these earphones are never used by me once I am done reviewing them.

This earphone, however, will change all that! The sound quality is seriously good considering the price.

The Evidson Audiowear R5 has pretty impressive bass. The bass can hit pretty deep and while it is not the most detailed bass it still got plenty of detail and impact to boot. There is a mid-bass boost to be fair but it is not glaring and does sound nice.

The Evidson Audiowear R5 IEM is the most inexpensive earphones, but it still sacrifices something. Either bass, mid-range or treble. So far the bass was impressive and so are the mids! The mids are pretty clear though not as detailed as slightly more expensive earphones. There is a bit of harshness here and there but not that glaring. Mids are a bit forward and the soundstage is pretty intimate. Good for rock and other fast-paced music.

The treble is surprisingly also pretty good. There is plenty of detail that rivals more inexpensive earphones. There is plenty of extension and crispness. The only downside is there is a bit of harshness that crops up. The Evidson Audio R5 makes hearing songs that already have sibilance in the recording like ‘Lady in Red’ by Chris de Burgh sound really bad. You can eq down the sibilance somewhat if you EQ the 7 Hz – 10 Hz band but it doesn’t really go away.

However, if you don’t listen to a lot of vocals you won’t notice any sibilance. And after a little EQ, it doesn’t bother me as much anymore.

All in all a very solid sound for the price.

At the end of the day…

So if you are sensitive to sibilance these earphones aren’t for you. But for almost everyone else the awesome bass alone is enough to recommend the Evidson Audiowear R5!

And let us not forget these earphones have very good build quality AND an incredibly useful volume remote. If these were priced for about Rs. 1,500/-, these would be somewhat mediocre. But for Rs 700/- the Evidson Audiowear R5 IEMs thoroughly deserve a recommendation for being best in class at its price point.

Summary : This Evidson Audiowear R5 is a very solid earphone for the price. It is rare to get this good bass along with good mids and treble at this price range. In fact, I haven't heard any earphone as good as this below the Rs 1,000/- mark!
